You can also share an item with a combination of your organization, groups, and everyone. If you choose not to share the item, only you (and organization admins with privileges to view content owned by other members) can access the item. Until they are shared, your maps, apps, and other items are not available to others\u2014for example, they do not appear in search results and aren&#8217;t part of any group.<\/p><p>If you make an item public (that is, share it with everyone), it is accessible by everyone, including anonymous users, even if your organization does not allow anonymous access to its website. Access to items shared only with a private group requires that you have shared the item with that group and that group members are logged in. This is enforced anytime the item is accessed.<\/p><p>When you initially save a map or save a copy of a map, a new map item appears on the My Content tab of the content page and is only available to you. Sharing with specific groups restricts access to a smaller, more focused set of people. Members of the group can be from the same organization or different organizations. To enable collaborative editing, items <em>must<\/em> be shared to a <a href=\"https:\/\/dlac.grinnell.edu\/arcgisonline\/getting-started-with-arcgis-online\/groups\/\">shared update group<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/arcgis-online\/share-maps\/share-items.htm#GUID-40C9495F-1E40-4A5A-AD55-154FA8F90A14\"><strong>Everyone (public)<\/strong><\/a>: Sharing with everyone makes your item public; anyone who has access to ArcGIS Online, including anonymous users, can find and use it, and group owners can include it in their group content. If the item is a feature layer, anyone can export data from the layer when they access it from clients other than <span class=\"ph\">ArcGIS Online<\/span>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/arcgis-online\/share-maps\/share-items.htm#ESRI_SECTION1_B6BD1C17B5B9453F9862D356ADB880F2\"><strong>Your organization and a group<\/strong><\/a>: Share items with your organization and a <a href=\"https:\/\/dlac.grinnell.edu\/arcgisonline\/getting-started-with-arcgis-online\/groups\/\">group<\/a> if you want only members of your organization to have access to it, but you also want to highlight the content for a specific group.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/arcgis-online\/share-maps\/share-items.htm#ESRI_SECTION1_B6BD1C17B5B9453F9862D356ADB880F2\"><strong>Everyone and a group<\/strong><\/a>: If you want to share thematic content with a subset of users or organize your content into a collection of items, but you also want everyone to have access to your item, you can share an item with a group and with everyone. This is especially appropriate for focused group work where all members benefit from seeing a list of specific content they can use for collaboration and exchange. Open the map in Map Viewer, click the Share button, and choose an option for sharing it.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/arcgis-online\/share-maps\/link-to-items.htm#ESRI_SECTION1_BEB29D2E6835463F8A750E10B325CEE6\">Copy the short URL<\/a> and paste it into an email, blog, or website. <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/arcgis-online\/share-maps\/embed-maps-groups.htm#ESRI_SECTION1_F3F662EFF5964FF1B0890F025ABBF1EE\">Embed the map<\/a> in a website. <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/arcgis-online\/create-maps\/create-map-apps.htm\">Create an app<\/a>. Click the Facebook and Twitter buttons in the Share pop-up.<\/p><ol><li>Open a map in Map Viewer.<\/li><li>Click Share and use the provided short link to<a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/arcgis-online\/share-maps\/share-maps.htm\"> share the map<\/a> through email, instant message, and so on. When you share an item with a group, you allow other members of the group to access the item. In addition to sharing your own items, you can share items owned by members of your organization that have been shared with your organization or the public.<\/p><p>For some groups, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/arcgis-online\/share-maps\/create-groups.htm#ESRI_SECTION1_12B3CD7ADAF843DB90182A01824B3152\">shared update groups<\/a>, other members of the group can also update the items you share. When you share an item with a group that has this capability enabled, you remain the owner of the item. Other group members can update the item, including changing the item details or updating the content. Shared update groups can only be created by ArcGIS Online administrators: speak with a DLAC staff member or put in a ticket with ITS to request the creation of a shared update group.<\/p><ol><li>Verify that you are signed in and have<a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/arcgis-online\/reference\/roles.htm\"> privileges<\/a> to share content with groups.
